Massachusetts to Publicly Recognize Marriage of 26 Same-Sex Couples
Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick has ordered state officials to record the marriages of 26 out-of-state couples. Former Gov. Mitt Romney blocked the unions from being entered into the state registry, in an action Duval called “a gimmick to make what I feel was a discriminatory point."
The Supreme Judicial Court ruled in 2006 that Romney could use a 1913 law to prohibit out-of-state couples from marrying in Massachusetts if their home state did not allow gay marriage. The couples received marriage licenses in four towns protesting the ruling.
In announcing the order Patrick said, “It's a simple gesture to include the information on the register. Keeping it out was the gimmick."
